The Christ Child Society Chapter of South Bend, Indiana was founded and chartered in 1947 and was incorporated in 1949.  The Chapter was founded by Rosaleen "Puddy" Crowley.  Puddy had first heard about Mary Virginia Merrick and her Christ Child Soceity as a young girl, as her mother who had come from Washington had known Miss Merrick and had been a member of the Washington Chapter.  She had early memories of shopping for layette items and filling Christmas wishes in letters asking the Christ Child for the gift they most wanted for Christmas.  Her mother died when she was 8 years old but her father took her to meet Miss Merrick when they were in Washington visiting.  Puddy later went to Washington to attend Trinity College, where there was a Chapter of the Christ Child Society, and she began volunteering at the Christ Child Opportunity Shop in Washington and with some of the children from the Washington Chapter's Settlement House.  After college Puddy married the brother of her college classmate Patricia Caron Crowley.  After her marriage she moved to South Bend and the early seeds of beginning a South Bend Chapter of the Christ Child Society, where young Catholic women could do special work in the community, were planted.  Puddy gathered together a group of friends and they obtained permission from the Bishop to begin a Chapter, then called a "Branch", in South Bend.
