Beth Barrett - South Bend, IN

Beth Barrett NCCS Vice President

I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve children as a member of the National Christ Child Society Board.  I have been a member of the South Bend chapter for over 20 years, serving two separate terms on the board and as President, leading strategic planning, and chairing the first two dinner/auctions.  My primary focus has been expanding and enhancing our programs in an effort to break the cycle of poverty.

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, I graduated from Saint Mary’s College, South Bend, where I met Dan, then a student at Notre Dame, who became my husband of 40 years.  We moved to Detroit where I taught high school English and remedial reading while completing an MA in Remedial Reading Education.  After Dan completed medical school and his pediatric residency, we returned to South Bend where I substitute taught while our three children were young.  I served on the boards of their elementary and high schools and was active in school, parish and community activities, including board member and President of United Health Services.  I returned to college for a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting and commenced a ten year career interpreting for the Deaf.  However, I was lured into politics when a friend ran for Congress; I became his campaign volunteer coordinator and, when Congressman Donnelly was elected, I joined his staff as Grants Director for three terms in the House and then two years of his U.S. Senate term.

I recently retired to play with our three granddaughters, enjoy the wonderful adults Brian, Colleen and Mary Ann have become, get involved in the community, tend to my flower gardens, read more books, see the world, and devote more time to children in need through the Christ Child Society.
